Type 2 diabetes is the most common form occurring in 50 – 85% of all people with diabetes. Lifestyle choices can contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes. It is strongly associated with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and being overweight.
Diabetes is the name given to a group of conditions in which there is too much glucose (sugar) in the blood. The pancreas either cannot make insulin or the insulin it does make is not enough and cannot work properly. Without insulin doing its job, glucose builds up in the blood leading to high blood glucose levels which can lead to complications.
Pre-diabetes is the name given to either impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). IFG is when the fasting glucose level is higher than normal after a sugar test with your doctor. IGT is when your glucose levels are elevated immediately after your sugar test and two hours after the test. Pre-diabetes is when your blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.
